eplaceuntilaslateastheearlyperiodofthe13thcentury,wh
enGenghisKhan,asaresultofhisexpeditionagainstthewest,h
adconqueredvastexpansesoflandstretchingfromCentralAsiato
EasternEurope,includingthenorthofIran.ManyoftheMoslemsin
theconqueredareaswerethusforcedtoenlistandlatersettledin
China.
Amongtheenlistedmanyweresoldiers,andsomeweresmithsand
officialswhowerecalledtheHuipeopleinthehistorybooksont
heYuandynasty.TheHuipeoplelaterfollowedKublaiKhandownto
thesouth,helpinghimunifyingChinaandthenestablishtheYuand
ynasty.Inthewakeoftheconquest,IslamspreadalloverChinaa
ndmosquesbegantoappeareverywhere.IntheYuandynasty,manyMo
slemsheldpositionsbothinthemilitaryandcivilianorgansofth
ecountry.AndalotoftheMoslemstookpartinZhuYuanzhang’s
uprisingintheearly14thcenturyandmadegreatcontributionsto
thefoundingoftheMingDynasty.Therefore,alltheemperorsofth
eDynastyissuedmandatestoprotectIslam,andtosetupmosques
inpraiseoftheMoslemsfortheirfeats.Intheearly16thcentur
y,IslampredominatedQinghaiontheminoritynationalitiesincluding
theHuis,theUygurs,theKazaks,theKirgizes,theTajiks,theTar
tars,theOzbeks,theDongXiangs,theSalarsandtheBonans.The
MoslemsinXi’anaremainlytheHuis,beingasmallportionouto
fthetenmillioninChina.
